Lake Balaton is situated in Transdanubia. The length of the lake is 77 km, the width is 14 km. The water surface is 598 km2. The average depth of the Balaton is 3 metres , so the lake is shallow. In the summer the lake warms up to average 26 °C. The Northern bank of the lake deepens quicker than the southern. That is why the water is colder with some degrees.
The Balaton freezes almost every winter. During cold winters the thickness of the ice on the lake reaches a 30- 40 cm, offering excellent place for winter sports.
An important attraction of the Balaton is the wine culture. The most famous wines are offered in Badacsony, Somló and Balatonboglár.
